Tornado Watch Versus Tornado Warning

3/27/2018 (Permalink)

A tornado WATCH means a tornado is possible in your area.

  • Listen to local radio and TV stations for further updates.
  • Stay away from windows
  • Prepare a small disaster kit if there has not been one made
  • Keep pets inside
  • Bring patio furniture and outside items into a garage or inside storage area if time and weather permit
  • Be alert to changing weather conditions. Blowing debris or sound of alert you; tornadoes reportedly sound similar to freight train.

A tornado WARNING means a tornado has been sighted and may be headed for your area.

  • Seek safe shelter immediately if you are inside; go to a safe place located on the lowest floor and on the interior side of the building with little or no windows or glass. Take your disaster preparation kit.
  • If you are outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building
  • If you are in a car, mobile home, or portable building and head out to safety
  • If you are driving avoid bridges or overpasses and pull over if debris is flying (with your engine running and your head down and covered) drive to nearest shelter when possible
